Interview with a journalist: Tanya Napold - Grad Journalism student/ News Roots Journalist Intern
Tanya is a graduate from USF, and is continuing her education in the Masters' program. She has been recently interning at NewsRoots, which is a community based online news paper. Tanya has a few articles published in NewsRoots. She has explained that Facebook has helped grow their online newspaper.
What social media platforms do you use?
Facebook, but I do not personally use twitter a lot.
When, how, and why did you start?
I received a Facebook account when they first came out, when you still needed a college email to be able to enter. I started using it because it was a quick way to network.
About how much time a week do you spend using social media for work?
I do use it occasionally to get a hold of people that I need for work. It also helps to promote NewsRoots, but I use it mainly to update personal life. At News Roots it does come in handy sometimes. It helps to attract new readers and introduce the online newspaper to new people within the community.
Why do you use social media?
Because it's a fast way to network with other people.
Does your employer require you to use social media?
They do not require it, but they have their own Facebook page.
Did your employer offer training?
Training on networking through social media? No. Most of us already know how to do that.
Does your employer have a policy about how its journalists use social Media? If so, can you describe the policy or share it?
The Facebook page helps attract readers, its not a policy; we just want to have people more aware of our community articles.
How do you measure results?
Clicks and posted comments on our Facebook page I suppose.
Have you been satisfied with the results of your efforts?
Yes. News Roots is a local news organization that brings the community together. That is our focus, local/community news.
