How Journalists use twitter to connect with their audience

by Justin Romaine

In the era of social media, Journalists must have the ability and knowledge of working sites such as Twitter and Facebook.

In the era of social media, Journalists must have the ability and knowledge of working sites such as Twitter and Facebook. There is a wide variety of untold stories frequently popping up and as a Journalist must be capable of pulling them out of the social media world. Hashtags help journalists find people tweeting about topics they are covering, and they also help people find journalists tweets.

Twitter is very useful to journalists as it is a great tool for connecting the journalist with his audience. Take advantage of the tool. Listen to feedback from your audience.

Give your audience a behind-the-scenes look at the reporting process. Jenni Hogan, a reporter for KIRO-TV tweets behind-the-scenes as a way to generate interest in her work. When people react to the information, Hogan replies to them. Followers really appreciate the time journalists take out of their day to reply to tweets.

Example - “If I am watching an accident on our chopper feed and it’s hard to look at, I’ll tweet that. If I get starstruck by someone who is in our studio, I’ll let my followers know. It’s more of a behind-the-scenes,” Hogan said. “If I’m covering a story, then they’re going to get information on that story, but it’ll be through my eyes and emotions." (Poynter)

Followers want to know that there's a person behind a Twitter acount. Show your voice! Instead of always tweeting headlines, sometimes start conversations about your stories to hook the audience. Tweet about a favorite quote, or line of your story. If you ask a question, and someone answers, make sure you reply to them. Showing that there is actually a person behind the twitter account helps strengthen our voices as journalists.

Help your audience keep track of an ongoing story. As journalists if you create a seperate account, it is your responsibility to tweet about it from your site's main twitter acount. Make it easy on the audience.

You need to allow your followers to feel comfortable with you. Once you make them feel comfortable, they begin to trust you.

Pollsters know how to poll better than I do, but will one explain why we should expect a 50% increase, over 08, of Dem turnout edge in Ohio?
IEn route to KY, Ryan tweaks reporters for pitching "soft balls." So I asked him abt abortion & he ducks:
Speaking of ducking questions, , can you please address whether you still believe HR 3 redefined rape?
