I chose to interview Janet Keeler, Food and Travel Critic for the St. Pete Times. Many of you know her from the courses she co-teaches at USF. She's been in the field a long time, so I thought she could provide some really good insight as to what some of the journalists that haven't grown up with a laptop attached to their hip, or their cell phone to their ear, are thinking about this new SM craze.
30 years
What social media platforms do you use?
Twitter and Facebook
When, how, and why did you start?
I started using both last year. I joined them mostly to promote my work at the St. Petersburg Times. I am more regular with Facebook and I update my status about 5 times a week. On Twitter, I go through spurts. I tweeted three times yesterday and now I might not do it for another week.
About how much time a week do you spend using social media for work?
About two hours.
Why do you use social media?
To promote my work
Does your employer require you to use social media?
No.
Did your employer offer training?
Yes.
Does your employer have a policy about how its journalists use social Media? If so, can you describe the policy or share it?
The policy is basically that you are not to post anything that would go against the company's principles or yours as a journalist.
How do you measure results?
I don't really.
Have you been satisfied with the results of your efforts?
I am not sure if it does any good. It's sort of fun, especially Facebook, but whether it brings more readers to the St. Petersburg Times or my work, I don't know.
