Social media: how much do you use it?

By Jared White

Let us all face the facts. As a society we are driven to communicate with each other. Every person has the need to talk with other people and express themselves. Most of this is done through social media.

Which begs the question, how much social media do you use? I went on a mission to answer this question and hopefully discovery how much social media several people use.

Researching people who used social media provided me with a better detail of just how many people are connected to the world through social websites. Some popular sites that were mentioned during my survey was; Facebook, Twitter, Digg, Myspace, and some active blog sites. The information that I gathered led me to believe that social media is different for each person, but in one shape or form all of them were connected. The study also showed that all of the participants were very active in social media.

I surveyed ten people. All of the people who participated were from the ages of 18 to 29. Seven men and three women were tested for the survey. This presented multiple viewpoints in how different people use social media. The general result was that each person had been using a social networking site for over two years. The most common thing for these ten people people was that they started to use social media with Myspace or Facebook. Another interesting fact was that all of the survey takers agreed that they could multi task when using social media. Most of the people mentioned that they used Facebook when listening to music, doing homework, watching TV, or even surfing the Internet. Almost all social media took place from computers or phone applications among the people surveyed. People also said that they used social media at least once every day, usually spending at least 30 minutes to 2 hours a day on a social media website.

All of the surveys were in an agreement that they liked how social media kept them in contact with friends and family. Another common theme was getting news from different companies that were listed in facebook or twitter. Facebook and Twitter were the most commonly mentioned sites in the surveys when it came to communicating with friends and loved ones. Almost all of the people agreed that they liked how social media allowed them to express themselves. Some negative things that were mentioned is the fact that there seemed to be a lot of privacy issues on some social sites and just how much information is being presented on these websites.

Social media has also changed the way that some of these people live their lives. Many of the survey takers admitted that the check facebook and twitter just to keep in touch with what goes on during the day. Some of the results mentioned that this was a normal routine for them too. Social media has helped several users to be better at communicating for jobs, expressing ideas, and gaining new friends. All of the people used social media personal reasons.

Social media has changed the way that these people have lived their lives for the last several years. None of the people surveyed believed that being so digitally associated was a bad thing. It has become a normal thing for almost all people now a days. Social media can only continue to gain more support and will see improvements for many years to come.
