Peer into a photojournalist's perspective

By Jennifer Israel

St. Petersburg Times Photojournalist Lara Cerri of 10 years, talks about her professional uses of SM.

How long in journalism?
20 years

What social media platforms do you use?
Facebook regularly, YouTube, Flickr, Delicious and StumbleUpon a few times

When, how, and why did you start?
I started Facebook to keep in touch with college graduates I had taught during a Poynter Fellow program. Eventually, my age group grabbed hold of it and it became our connector. The others were simply to share photos or videos, or to bring attention to a site I liked.

About how much time a week do you spend using social media for work?
Hardly ever, it's mainly social. Half hour maybe to check on some contacts or share recent work.

Why do you use social media?
To share photo albums or recent Times work, to keep updated with friends' lives, to invite and accept invitations to events. To raise money for a charity or awareness of an event.

Does your employer require you to use social media?
No

Did your employer offer training?
They've offered Twitter training but I haven't done it.

Does your employer have a policy about how its journalists use social Media? If so, can you describe the policy or share it?
I don't know of a blanket policy, but I do know that in the photo dep't. we do not generally pull online photos or profiles from MySpace because they are not always reliable sources.

How do you measure results?
n/a

Have you been satisfied with the results of your efforts?
n/a
